"Under-the-Sink" Trash Compactor

 

A sophomore year design project that served as an introduction to the engineering design process. The product was designed to be an under-the-sink trash can with built in trash compaction. Upon a button press, a motor would rotate a set of bands attached to a horizontal plate. The downward force provided by the plate was proven sufficient to compact the average household trash by over 40% in less than 30 seconds.

Our team of 5 (of which I served as Team Lead) was responsible for the conceptual design, mathematical and physical models, financial budgeting, and prototype construction. We exceeded the client’s functionality, time, and budget constraints.
